Large tortoiseshell lid decorated with silver inlay in a classical design. Opening the lid on a spring catch displays all original fittings, the base of the box is inset with white velvet with a gold silk lining. Silver marks for London 1912 and with makers mark WO. VICTORIAN ENGLISH COLLAPSIBLE TOP HAT.

Fine quality black silk top hat, this is the desirable type that is collapsible for easy transport. Interior has gold makers label for, A.J.White Hatter Cap maker, Jermy St, St James St, Regent St. The hat is also printed with the original owners initials which appear to be G.H.N but they are rather faint now. Several tiny moth nips but over all very nice.  read more

Highley decorative borders with with inscription to the exterior side of the lid and it is inscribed, PRESENTED TO WILLIAM KNOTT ESQ CHAIRMAN OF THE GENERAL PURPOSE COMMITTEE 1851 with large coat of arms. The interior of the lid has a second and considerably longer eleven line inscription and it all also has silver hallmarks for Nathaniel Mills Birmingham 1850. Near mint.  read more
